Benefits of Painting Aluminum Siding
Nowadays, homeowners are quick to replace something about their home if they feel it is outdated. However, when it comes to aluminum siding, a simple coat of paint can make a significant difference.
Enhance Appearance
We all want our homes to look good when people drive by or come to visit. One way to elevate your home’s exterior and boost curb appeal is with a new coat of paint on your aluminum siding.
This is especially helpful if you’re planning to sell your home, as it can increase your home’s value and help it sell faster.
Painting your home’s exterior has a 152% ROI when selling!
Save Money
You can save thousands of dollars by deciding to repaint your aluminum siding rather than replacing it entirely. Replacing aluminum siding can cost $23,000 on average.
The
average cost of exterior painting is half or even a third of the price of replacing your siding.
Protects Your Home
Aluminum siding is already known for its durability, but applying a fresh coat of paint every so often adds another layer of protection. When you choose high-quality, premium paint for your aluminum siding, it acts as a barrier between the harsh outdoor elements and weather, further protecting your siding and your home.
What Kind of Paint Do You Use on Aluminum Siding?
The best type of paint to use on aluminum siding is 100% acrylic latex paint specifically designed for exterior use.
This type of paint dries quickly, applies easily, and is highly durable to harsh weather and UV rays from the sun. The color holds its vibrance for years, providing an elevated and fresh look for your home.
How to Paint Aluminum Siding
Painting aluminum siding requires precision and following a strict step-by-step process. Deviating from the process could result in bubbling, cracked, or uneven paint application.
Step 1: Assess the Siding for Damage
Understanding the damage to repair is the first step in painting your aluminum siding. Our homes withstand hours of harsh weather and storms each year. From hail, windy conditions, or normal wear and tear, your aluminum siding may have holes or dents that require repair.
Aluminum siding is also prone to mildew and oxidation, a chalk-like substance that develops on the surface.
Step 2: Repair Siding Where Necessary
Before even picking up a paintbrush, you will need to repair the damage you’ve identified. Fill in holes, add new caulking around windows, and smooth out dents.
To fix holes, use shears to cut a piece of aluminum to cover the hole. Seal it to the siding using gutter sealant or exterior filler.
To fix dents in the aluminum siding, fill them in with a hydrophobic acrylic latex filler. Ensure it is sandable to achieve a smooth and flat surface.
Step 3: Test for Lead Paint
Aluminum siding was a popular material for homes built in the 1940s to the 1980s. If your aluminum siding hasn’t been repainted, it could likely have lead-based paint, which was only banned in 1978.
To know if there is lead paint on your siding, use a
home lead paint testing kit. If lead is present, then you’ll need to call a professional who is certified in lead abatement. (VanDerKolk Painting professionals are all certified in RRP lead paint removal and abatement!)
Step 4: Clean the Aluminum Siding
Prepping and cleaning your aluminum siding is key to a long-lasting paint job.
The first part of cleaning is to use a pressure washer to remove dirt and grime from the aluminum siding. Make sure to go from top to bottom to prevent water from getting under the siding panels.
Then you may want to wash the siding by hand with a cleaning solution containing the following ingredients:
1 cup chlorine bleach- 1 cup TSP (trisodium phosphate)
- 1 gallon of water
When using this solution, use safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself in case of splashing.
Expert Tip:
If you notice mildew on the siding,
use a mildew-resistant cleaner and scrub it away gently with a sponge.
Step 5: Prime the Siding
Applying one coat of primer to your aluminum siding will help the paint adhere more effectively to the surface and create a smoother finish. Select an acrylic primer explicitly designed for use on metal surfaces.
Apply the primer with a paint roller, going from top to bottom to avoid dripping. It’s helpful to start from one end (left or right) and move across to the other end with your roller. This ensures more even coverage.
Wait for the primer to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions before applying your paint.
Step 6: Apply Two Coats of Paint
Depending on the paint color, you will need at least two coats of paint for a vibrant and durable paint coating.
Just as you applied the primer, start from the top and work your way down, moving from one end to the next for even coverage. When it comes to painting around windows and doors, use a paintbrush to cut in.
Wait for your first coat of paint to dry before adding the second coat. Typically, you should
wait around 4 hours, but always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for exact timing.

Aluminum Siding Painting FAQs
Is It Better to Spray or Roll Paint on Aluminum Siding?
There are two effective methods to paint exterior surfaces: spraying or rolling.
When it comes to professional painters, we often prefer spraying paint for the most even coverage. However, we combine both spraying and rolling where necessary for the best results.
If you plan to paint aluminum siding yourself, rolling is the recommended option. You have more control, and there is less investment in the products used.
Learn more about the difference between these painting methods in our blog, “Rolling vs. Spraying Paint: Which Method is Best?”
How Long Does Paint Last on Aluminum Siding?
Typically, exterior paint on aluminum siding lasts between 5 and 10 years, depending on the quality of the paint and the weather conditions.
Since
aluminum siding lasts up to 40, sometimes even 50, years, that means you can expect to paint it at least four times within its lifetime.
How Do You Maintain Painted Aluminum Siding?
After investing in a fresh paint job (or doing it yourself) on your aluminum siding, you’ll want to maintain it to ensure a vibrant appearance for years to come.
The best way to do this is by rinsing your home’s exterior with a mild detergent and garden hose once a year. If you notice mildew, use a gentle mildew-resistant soap to remove it with a soft sponge.
If you notice areas where the paint is chipping or faded, simply apply a new coat to touch up the area when necessary.
When Is the Best Time to Paint Aluminum Siding?
When you paint exterior projects, your timing largely depends on the weather. You’ll need a full weekend of sunny weather, with temperatures between 50°F and 85°F during the day and low humidity.
This can delay your painting project by weeks if you’re relying on completing it during the weekend. However, when you hire VanDerKolk Painting, our team is always ready for when the weather is ideal for exterior painting—no waiting for the right weekend required!
Can I Paint My Aluminum Siding Myself?
Yes, it is possible to paint aluminum siding yourself. However, it is a large job—literally. Depending on the size of your house, the prep work and painting require many hours or intense labor.
For large exterior projects, we recommend working with professional painters who have the necessary equipment to ensure precision, efficiency, and a high-quality application.
