Can You Paint Over Wallpaper? Expert Answers & Tips

Are you tired of staring at the wallpaper in your home, wishing that you could change it, but don’t have the time or energy to remove it and then paint the wall? You’re not alone! The good news? It’s possible to paint over wallpaper without removing it.
Whether you’re renovating a home from the 1990s with old wallpaper or need a refresh in your own home from recently installed wallpaper, this guide has everything you need to know about painting over wallpaper.
Can You Paint Over Wallpaper?
The simple answer is yes, you can paint over wallpaper.
Most people want to know whether they can paint over wallpaper because removing it is strenuous and messy. Tearing the paper from the wall can be laborious. On top of that, you’ll need to further repair the newly exposed wall before painting. That’s a lot of work!
However, before you jump for joy about painting over wallpaper, there is still a lot of prep involved. Additionally, it’s important to understand that the coat of paint could highlight the wallpaper’s texture, preventing a smooth appearance.
So, even though you can paint over wallpaper, it isn’t always the best option. We’ll dive deeper into when it’s a good idea to paint over it and when it’s best to skip it.
Pros and Cons of Painting Over Wallpaper
Though it’s possible to paint over wallpaper, it comes with upsides and downsides. Below is a comparison of the pros and cons of painting over wallpaper to help you decide if it’s the right path for your home’s interior.
| Pros of Painting Over Wallpaper | Cons of Painting Over Wallpaper |
|---|---|
| Saves time upfront | Hidden problems stay hidden (tears, bubbles, seams, or mold) |
| Lower immediate cost | Risk of peeling or bubbling |
| Less wall damage initially | Finish is rarely “perfect” |
| Can work in limited cases | Shorter paint lifespan |
| Good for low-traffic rooms | Extra prep required |
| Avoids dust and debris | Primer is a must |
| DIY-friendly if done carefully | Harder to fix later on |
How to Paint Over Wallpaper
If your wallpaper is in good condition, free from tears or bubbling, then painting over it might save you a ton of time and labor. Below are the steps required to paint over wallpaper successfully.
Step 1: Seal Wallpaper Seams
Depending on the initial installation and age, the wallpaper seams may be visible. If this is the case, take some drywall mud and seal the seams. Let it dry and then sand it smooth. This will result in a more even paint application when it comes time.
Step 2: Clean the Wallpaper
Using household bleach or a degreaser and a sponge, wash the wallpaper to remove dust, debris, and dirt.
It’s important to avoid using too much water or liquid during this process. It could cause the wallpaper to bubble or seams to lift because it can weaken the adhesive. Additionally, moisture can become trapped behind the wallpaper,
leading to mold growth—a situation you definitely do not want to deal with later.
Step 3: Apply Painter’s Tape
To ensure a clean paint application, we recommend taping off edges where the wall meets molding, door frames, and light switches. This ensures pristine lines and prevents any paint from getting where it isn’t supposed to be.
Step 4: Prime the Wallpaper
Some sources may tell you that priming wallpaper isn’t necessary. But from our experience, it’s a must.
Primer helps your paint adhere better to the surface. Plus, it can improve the paint’s appearance and opacity. And when it comes to covering wallpaper, especially if it’s dark or patterned, primer can be extremely helpful.
If you’re painting over a light colored wallpaper, you’ll only need one coat of oil- or
shellac-based primer. However, if the wallpaper has an intricate design or has a dark-toned color, two coats of primer are likely best.

Step 5: Paint Over the Wallpaper
Once the primer has fully dried (always check the manufacturer’s instructions), you can apply your first coat of paint.
Begin by cutting the edges and corners around the room with an angled paintbrush. This will make it much easier to ensure clean lines throughout the room.
Next, use a â…œ’’ or ½’’ paint roller to paint a large “W” on one wall. Then roll back and forth by section until the entire section is filled in. Move on to the following sections until the wall is completely painted.
Wait for the paint to dry before adding a second coat of paint. This ensures the wallpaper underneath does not show through the paint once it has dried. In some cases, you may need three coats of paint.

What Paint Can You Use on Wallpaper?
You can use any interior paint on wallpaper.
However, when it comes to choosing the paint finish, the best option is an eggshell finish. This provides a subtle sheen while concealing some of the wallpaper's imperfections and texture. Avoid using gloss finishes as they make imperfections much more noticeable.

When Should You Not Paint Over Wallpaper?
Just because you can paint over wallpaper doesn’t mean it’s always the best option.
It’s not a good idea to paint over the wallpaper if it is:
- Peeling or lifting
- Textured, embossed, or heavily patterned
- Fabric, grasscloth, or foil
- Multiple layers
Additionally, if
the room has high humidity or there are water stains or mold spots behind the wallpaper, it’s best to skip painting and remove it entirely instead.
Lastly, painting over wallpaper isn’t a long-term solution. So, if you’re planning to sell your home or want a long-lasting project, it’s better to put in the effort to remove the wallpaper and paint the wall beneath.
