Concrete Floor Painting And Coating Overview

Concrete floors are hardworking and rugged, but they can also be visually appealing! Coating or painting your concrete floors elevates the look of even the most industrial space while also providing benefits to you and your floors. Concrete floor coatings protect floors from cracking and provide an extra layer of insulation. Coatings can also make floor maintenance easier. Keeping your floors in good condition improves safety, and certain finishes can reduce slip hazards. In industrial spaces, a fresh coat of paint to mark borderlines and safety stripes prevents other workplace safety hazards.

At VanDerKolk Painting, we’ll work closely with you to help you determine the best concrete floor finish for your space. We offer a wide range of concrete floor coatings to suit your needs and budget.

Our Concrete Floor Coating Process

Operating a business is difficult. Coating your floors shouldn’t be. We strive to keep our process as straightforward and simple as possible. Our process can be broken down into just five steps.

  1. Pick Your Finish: We start with a free on-site analysis of your existing flooring system and provide our recommendations for flooring finishes based on usage. We’ll work with you to find a coating option that fits with your needs and budget.
  2. Floor Prep: We use specialized equipment to create an even surface for your floors. This may involve grinding away blemishes.
  3. Repairs: Cracks and pits in your concrete floor are filled in and repaired to create an even surface.
  4. Product Application: Depending on the type of floor coating or finish you select, the product will be mixed and applied to floors. For coatings with multiple parts, like epoxy with chips, this may require a few extra steps.
  5. Clear Coat and Clean Up: If it’s required for the floor coating being used, the final clear coat is applied on top to create a flawless finish. We finish up by cleaning up any messes we’ve brought into your space.

Concrete Finishes Available

There are a wide variety of concrete coatings and finishes available depending on the usage of a space and the desired look. We can help walk you through all your options and determine which is the best option for you.

Epoxy Coatings

Epoxy floor coatings are a type of synthetic resin coating that provides a highly durable finish. Epoxy is a popular choice because it’s available in many different styles. It can be applied in different thicknesses using different methods, and it is available in many colors. Decorative finishes such as epoxy terrazzo flooring and epoxy flake coatings are popular for their aesthetic appeal as well as their durability.

Polyurea/Polyaspartic Coatings

We offer polyurea and polyaspartic concrete floor coatings as alternatives to epoxy. Both provide a similar look to epoxy flooring, with a few differences.

Polyurea is considered to be a subtype of polyurethane, and it is made up of synthetic resin and isocyanate-reactive materials. Polyurea comes in a variety of preparations with different qualities. Some types of polyurea are UV resistant, which prevents color changes and yellowing over time, and polyurea can be more durable and scratch-resistant than epoxy. However, polyurea can be difficult to work with due to its fast curing time. If not installed properly, it may have a weaker bond with concrete floors, and any mistakes will clearly show.

Polyaspartic is a type of polyurea that has been modified to slow curing time. This makes them easier to work with and improves adhesion to concrete floors. They also have better UV resistance than polyurea flooring. Polyaspartic and polyurea are both great options for a long-lasting finish but are best installed by professionals due to their difficulty to work with.

Concrete Staining

Concrete staining is usually a lower-cost option than floor coatings. Concrete stains are similar to wood stains in that they come in a variety of colors and are semi-translucent, allowing you to see some of the natural concrete patterns and color variations under the stain. Concrete stains are available in different varieties, including acid stains, water-based stains, and concrete dye. Unlike paints or other floor coatings, concrete stains penetrate into the concrete rather than sitting on top, meaning that the color is unlikely to fade or chip away. A protective coating can be applied on top, but concrete stains provide less protection for your floors than floor coatings.

Concrete Polishing

A polished concrete floor surface is achieved by using grinders to create a smooth and shiny surface. Like concrete stains, concrete polishing doesn’t provide any extra protection for your concrete floors, but it does create a beautiful, low-maintenance look for a lower cost.

Other Finishes And Services

We have perfect flooring options to meet all your needs. When work can’t be interrupted, our “quick-set” products allow your hi-los and other heavy equipment to operate within 15 minutes. We offer a flint broadcasting aggregate to develop greater impact resistance, prevent slipping, and improve aesthetics and performance. For warehouses and industrial spaces, we’ll add borderlines and safety stripes to define aisles and work areas.

Concrete Floor Coating FAQs

  • How Much Do Floor Coating Services Cost?

Concrete floor finishing costs vary greatly depending on the size of the space, the type of floor finish required, and the type and quality of coating being applied. For an accurate estimate, give us a call or fill out our quote request form to get a free quote.

  • Are Polished Concrete And Epoxy Floors Slippery?

Epoxy, polyurea, and polyaspartic floor coatings can be slippery when wet, so non-slip coatings or extra steps like adding chips or texturing are often included for safety. Although they look smooth and slippery, most polished concrete floors are actually fairly slip-resistant, even when wet. If this is a concern, let us know and we will recommend the best non-slip finish for your floors.

  • How Long Does It Take For Coated Floors To Dry?

Different types of coatings have different curing times to dry completely. Polyurea coatings may dry in only a matter of minutes, polyaspartic usually takes hours to dry, and epoxy coatings require several days to become completely dry. When you select your floor coating, we’ll let you know how long to avoid walking on floors for the best results.

  • What Colors Are Available For Concrete Floors?

Concrete floors can be painted, stained, or coated with just about any color you can imagine. Adding chips to coatings can also create a multicolored look.
