Everybody Wants Me (and it’s killing me!)

Our president, Tom VanDerKolk, was asked to speak at the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA) forum in Cleveland this week. Since Cleveland is home to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it was so appropriate that Tom’s walk-up music was from legendary rocker Billy Squires!

Community Day Vanguard Charter AcademyBilly’s well-know song Everybody Wants You fit the theme of Tom’s talk: “Everybody wants me and it’s killing me!” Tom shared how the fast growth of VanDerKolk+Kooi Painting made him feel like he was being pulled in all different directions. Tom then shared five valuable lessons he has learned to help him take control:

  1. Not delegating properly
  2. Having ill-defined standard operating procedures
  3. Not having beefy enough job descriptions for his teammates
  4. Lousy time management (coupled with a lack of discipline)
  5. Not letting go and not saying no

Tom explained that getting control of these five vital areas helped him retake control of his business. Instead of his business owning him, Tom now feels like he truly owns his business.

Hopefully these ideas can be of benefit to you too!
